FELT PENNANT HONORING MACK NOW AVAILABLE
1950 was a special year for the Philadelphia athletics because it commemorated Connie Mack’s golden anniversary as the manager of the A’s. To celebrate this special event the Athletics made many collectibles available to its fans. The team yearbook was featured in gold as was the team photograph. There were decals of your favorite players, autographed baseballs, cards, pennants, and many more items still lost in the A’s history. However one that just surfaced is the HUGE FELT PENNANT HONORING MACK . In 1950 only about a dozen of these pennants were made. The team had them on display throughout the second level at Shibe Park. Our late great historian Max Silberman filled in all of the missing data when he wrote a column for a National Sports Publication titled, MEET ME UNDER THE CLOCK.
In that 1944 movie, Judy Garland & Robert Walker became romantically involved after meeting under the clock at New York’s famous Pennsylvanica train station. When you entered Shibe Park thru the gates at 21st & Lehigh the first thing you saw was this massive set of marble steps that led up to the second level, there you were greeted by a food & souvenir stand and hanging high above the stand was one of these 50th anniversary banners. Max wrote how many couples of the era used that spot to meet that someone special, like in the 1944 movie.
In recent years several of those couples have stopped into the Museum to share why the A’s are so special to them.
When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. You might recall that classic line from the 1962 movie, WHO KILLED LIBERTY VALANCE that classic featured, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin. The Society is looking to sell this unique part of the A’s past only to the buyer willing to pick it up in person, it is too large and expensive to ship. Yours for only $250 for that special place in your A’s Museum.
