Slugger Jim Lemon, best known for his home runs hit for the Washington Senators died May 14 at the age of 78.

Lemon who played briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1963 began his major league career with the Cleveland Indians (1950-51). He joined the Washington Senators in 1954 and remained there until 1960 when he and the team moved to Minnesota. Lemon played for the Twins until 1963 when he also joined the Phillies and the White Sox to conclude his career. His best years came in in 1959 and 1960 when he hit 33 and 38 home runs respectively. He finished his career with 164 home runs and 529 runs batted in.

In 1968 he was manager of the Washington Senators in their second incarnation.

Recently, the Athletics Historical Society had contact with the Lemon family who ordered a Ronnie Joyner print of Jim. We extend our deepest condolences to Jim Lemon’s family. He will always be a Phillie to many of us.
