Two-Time All-Star Coming to Cooperstown August 7

(COOPERSTOWN, NY): Former big league All-Star shortstop Eddie Joost, who managed the Philadelphia Athletics in their final season in 1954, will share his baseball memories at 1 p.m. August 7 in Cooperstown as part of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Legends Series.

The 92-year-old Joost will speak in the Hall of Fame’s Bullpen Theater. This program is included in Museum admission and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Joost enjoyed a 17-year Major League career from 1936 through 1955 with the Reds, Braves, Athletics and Red Sox. He was named to two All-Star teams and was a member of the 1940 Reds team that defeated Detroit in the World Series, playing all seven games and recording five hits.

In 1947, Joost began a six-year run as the Athletics starting shortstop. In five of those seasons, Joost finished in the top 15 of the American League Most Valuable Player voting. He drew 100-plus walks and hit at least 13 homers in each of his six seasons as the A’s starting shortstop.

In 1954, Joost became the A’s player/manager, leading Philadelphia during its last season as an American League team. The next season, the A’s moved to Kansas City.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week. The Museum observes off-season hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from the day after Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. Ticket prices are $16.50 for adults (13 and over), $11 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $6 for juniors (ages 7-12). Members are always admitted free of charge and there is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.
