ELDON AUKER DIES AT 95

by Max Silberman

American League pitcher Eldon Auker passed away on August 4, 2006, one month shy of his 96th birthday.

Although Eldon Auker never played for the Philadelphia Athletics, he was the very embodiment of the A’s Society, sharing his knowledge and memories of the game in many books and television documentaries. He was a fine gentleman and very fan friendly, much like the players that appear at A’s Society functions.

Known for his “submarine” style of pitching (almost touching the ground with his delivery) he broke in with the Detroit Tigers in 1933 and represented the Tigers in the 1934 and 1935 World Series. In 1939 he pitched for the Boston Red Sox for one season before moving on to the St. Louis Browns where he was the ace of the staff until 1942.

Collectors will remember Auker for his beautiful autograph which he willingly signed even into his 90s. He is survived by his wife of 73 years. He may not have been a member of the A’s but pitched frequently at Shibe Park and was always willing to talk baseball with fans and media.Eldon Auker would have been a wonderful reunion guest. May he be granted a perfect rest.
