BOB DILLINGER DEAD AT 91
by Max Silberman
Bob Dillinger, an early reunion guest, played third base for the A’s during the first half of the 1950 season. On November 7, 2009 he passed away at the age of 91.
Dillinger attended the University of Idaho on a football scholarship and was known for his great speed. He once raced Jesse Owens and lost but Dillinger wore a baseball uniform and Owens a track suit. He was signed by the St.Louis Browns but wartime service delayed his career. He came to the A’s in 1950 but his speed and batting did not overcome poor fielding and throwing and he was sold to the Pirates at quite a loss. He also played for the White Sox. The A’s infield was happy to later reacquire Hank Majeski.
He finished his career with the White Sox and the Pacific Coast league. The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society extends deepest condolences to his family. His passing leaves 51 A’s alumni.
