TONY
CARRAFIELL PASSES AWAY
by Max Silberman
Tony Carrafiell, known as "Kirby" to friends and loved
ones, departed this life on February 11.
In the 1970s, collectors of baseball cards and memorabilia were
few and collected not for financial gain as the cards had little
value. The collectors were true fans who loved the game of baseball
and its artifacts. Tony Carrafiell was such a collector and fan.
In the late 1970s, he and partner Larry Shane pioneered the autograph
and card shows featuring major superstars such as Mickey Mantle,
Ted Williams, Joe Di Maggio, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Enos Slaughter
and Sandy Koufax just to name a few.Along with the shows hosted
by Bob Schmierer and Ted Taylor, Philadelphia became a hotbed of
collecting.
By trade Mr. Carrafiell was a stone mason and the strong work ethic
and personal integrity he exhibited in his craft carried over to
his dealings in the hobby. For many years the Carrafiell family
operated a fine store in Drexel Hill where collectors gathered.
Mr. Carrafiell was a long time member and supporter of the Philadelphia
Athletics Historical Society and was a well loved and respected
member of the baseball hobby.
Over the past several years, he experience many health challenges
but continued to exhibit at shows all over the United States, so
great was his love for his hobby.
Mr. Carrafiell is survived by his wife Rose of 48 years, his son
John and daughter Renee and three grandchildren who were the light
of his life. The Society extends its deepest condolences to the
Carrafiell family and mourns his loss.
