BILL WERBER DIES AT 100
by Max Silberman
Bill Werber, team-mate of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove and
Jimmie Foxx and the oldest living major leaguer passed away January
22 at the age of 100.
His major league debut came in 1930 with the New York Yankees. He
also played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati
Reds and New York Giants. As third baseman for the Reds (where he
teamed with Eddie Joost) he led the team to a World's Championship. After
baseball he had a long career in life insurance.
Well into his 90s he appeared at a reunion of the A's Society and
was the keynote speaker. He also signed his book about his playing
days and in cooperation with the Society generously distributed
5,000 copies to troops in Iraq and to Veterans Homes.
Bill Werber's passing leaves 55 former Athletics. He was a graduate
of Duke University and one of the great gentlemen to have represented
the game of baseball.
