George Earnshaw |
|
George “Moose” Earnshaw joined the Philadelphia Athletics in 1928. He had been a winning pitcher with the minor league Baltimore Orioles when Connie Mack purchased his contract. Earnshaw joined the team on the verge of its second dynasty and proved to be an effective right-handed complement to left-handers Grove and Walberg. Earnshaw won over 20 games during each of the Athletics championship years (1929-31), claiming a league high 24 victories in 1929. He was also an effective pitcher in the World Series. Earnshaw had his best success in the 1930 Series, gaining two victories against the Cardinals, including the deciding sixth game. He pitched for the White Sox and Dodgers after leaving the Athletics, ending his career with the Cardinals in 1936. Earnshaw served in World War II and was a coach with the Phillies when the club won the National League title in 1950. He died in 1976.
