CONNIE MACK ALUMNI CLUB

by Max Silberman

Connie Mack lived to the ripe old age of 93. Believe it or not, 15 members of our alumni club have ( or will in 2006) have blown out 90 candles on the
birthday cake!

The ages listed are as of their birthdays in 2006. Our friends at the St. Louis Browns Society published a similar list of Browns players in their fine publication "Pop Flies." Imitation is the sincerest form of approval so we give thanks to our "cousins" of the Browns Society for the idea. Leading the list of senior Athletics is Billy Werber (1937-38 with the A's). He has reached the age of 98 and will soon be joined by Sol Carter (1931 A's) who will turn 98 in December. The third spot belongs to Emil Mailho
(1936) at 97 followed by Eddie Mayo (1943) at 96 and Ace Parker (1937-38) who is 94.

Others in this exclusive club are: George Binks (1947-48) 90, Herman Franks (1947-48) 92, Buddy Hancken (1940) 92, Gene Handley (1946-47) 92, Dario Lodigiani (1938-40) 90, Benny McCoy (1940-41) 91, Eddie Joost (1947-54) 90, Les McCrabb (1939-42,1950) 92, Pete Naktenis (1936) 92 and Pete Suder ( 1941-43,1946-54) 90.

Who might be the youngest of our players? Bill Oster of the 1954 club is only 73!

The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society sends best wishes to these players and wishes them all years of good health and happiness.
