REUNION TO CELEBRATE 1930 CHAMPS

By Dave Jordan

The annual Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society's breakfast reunion, scheduled this year for October 23, 2005, will pay tribute to the last of Connie Mack's five world champions, the great A's team of 1930. Reunion committee chairman Michael Morsch announced that the theme of this year's reunion will be a salute to the 75th anniversary of the 1930 world champions, a team which featured stars like Al Simmons, George Earnshaw, Jimmy Foxx, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Max Bishop, and Bing Miller, among others. While none of Mack's players from that team are now living, the Society hopes to honor the children and descendants of those renowned players. The Athletics won the World Series in 1930, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in six games. Earnshaw won two, with a 0.72 earned run average, while Grove won the other two, with an e.r.a. of 1.42. Jimmy Dykes, Simmons, Cochrane and Foxx provided the Mackian batting heroics.

The breakfast will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Williamson's Restaurant in Horsham, Pa., on the 23rd of October, climaxing a weekend of nostalgic recollection of past A's glory. Many stars of later A's teams are expected to be on hand as well. Tickets for the breakfast are $40 each for Society members and their guests, $50 each for non-members, and seating will be, as usual, on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are currently available through the Society's gift shop in Hatboro, telephone (215)323-9901, e-mail at yorkroad6@aol.com or online.

Games 3, 4, 5, were played in St. Louis's
Sportsmans Park. The Cardinals won games 3 # 4 defeating Walberg & Grove to tie the series at 2 games each. However, Grove after losing game 4 the day before came back in relief in game 5 to win and give the A's a 3 games to 2 lead heading back to Shibe Park.

Shibe Park circa 1930 World Series

The best seats "On" the house!!!!!

20th & Lehigh fans fill rooftops during 1930 World Series.

A few years later Mr. Mack had the right field wall raised 22 feet to correct this problem.

After 1931 the A's never appearerd in a world series in Philadelphia.

1931 Opening Day

It is opening day at Shibe Park in 1931 for the hoisting of the 1930 World Series Champion flag. Interesting to note that the visiting team had numbers on their uniforms but the A's did not at that time. Want to guess who the visiting team was? Sadly, this was the last time a World Series Championship flag would ever wave over Shibe Park.

Blow up for Mascot

Finally note the inscription on the back of the bat boy, "Mascot."
