THE HOOK COMES TO HATBORO
by Max Silberman
Near Chester, PA is the town of Marcus Hook. It is the hometown
of one of baseball's finest hitters and greatest first basemen,
Mickey Vernon. Vernon won the American League batting titles in
1946 and 1953 and played more games at first base than any other
player except Eddie Murray. Vernon and noted baseball author Rich
Westcott produced the just released book "Mickey Vernon: The
Gentleman First Baseman."
On Saturday, July 16, Marcus Hook came to Hatboro. Accompanied by
friends and members of the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame,
Vernon appeared at the museum for a book signing. From the size
of the crowd that afternoon (250 people), passersby thought the
book signing was for Harry Potter!
Among those gathered to share Mickey Vernon's afternoon were:Chuck
Taylor, Jim Vankoski, Joe Cirilli and Rich Pagano.
While Ernie Montella, Max Silberman, Rikki Silberman, Clara McGonigal
and Mike Morsch handled book sales and autograph orders, Mike Fesnak
was busy outside conducting a sidewalk sale.At the counter, Kaitlyn
was taking care of the many customers.
The day was a tremendous success as every book on hand was sold.
Rich Westcott also autographed the books and Mickey Vernon was as
gracious and warm to the fans as always.
Mickey Vernon is an example of that old saying: "It is nice
to be important but more important to be nice." His hometown
of "Hook" erected a statue of Vernon and it could not
be more deserved.
The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society was proud to show
off the recently renovated museum to the many guests and extends
its thanks to Mickey Vernon for his long and wonderful association
with the Society.

The kids just loved Mickey Vernon.
