Mickey VernonMickey Vernon Honored by PA Sports Hall of Fame

As are all of the former major league players that attend the A's Society Reunions, Mickey Vernon is an Honorary Member of the Society.  As such, we show our appreciation for his support by sharing with our visitors this tribute to one of the finest gentlemen to ever grace a major league field.  We hope that one day the words of Maje McDonnell will ring true and Mickey Vernon will take his rightful place in Cooperstown, NY.

On Wednesday, October 18th the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame honored baseball great Mickey Vernon, a long time local favorite.  An overflow crowd of 125 jammed the Casa Luigi's Restaurant in Clifton Heights, PA to participate in the occasion.

Maje McDonnell, former Phillies Whiz Kid, and long time Phillies executive spoke encouragingly about Mickey's notable major league achievments, and when compared to many of his peers already inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, leaves no explanation as to why Vernon has been denied this long overdue honor. He encouraged the packed room to start a 'Vernon" for Hall of Fame" campaign and go nationwide.

Former major league players Joe Astroth, Al Brancato , Bobby Shantz, and Howie Bedell were all part of the program hosted by the chapters president, former West Chester, PA, football coach, John Furlow.  Many Delaware County former professional sports figures were also in attendance to honor one of the most popular professional athletes of all time, Mickey Vernon.

Actual cover of the September 18, 1946 Sporting News Cover shows Mickey Vernon and Ted Williams as they were embattled in the race for the American League batting title. Vernon beat out a select group of American League stars as he topped the league with a .353 average followed by Ted Williams at .342, Johnny Pesky at .335 George Kell at .322 and Dom DiMaggio at .316 (Dom topped his brother Joe that year as Joe hit a respectable .290).  Vernon won his second title in 1953 as he topped Al Rosen by one percentage point .337 vs .336.  In 1953, Al Rosen led the league in Homeruns and RBI's.  The loss of the batting title cost Rosen the Triple crown that year.
