GRATZ HONORS CARL SCHEIB
by Max Silberman
Tucked away in Pennsylvania's Dauphin County, Carl Scheib
entered this world on New Year's Day in 1927 in the town of
Gratz. In September of 1943, Scheib became the youngest player
in American League history at the age of 16, an honor which
he still holds.
On Saturday, June 18th, Carl Scheib will be honored by his
hometown and will travel from his home in Texas for the event.
Scheib pitched for the A's from 1943 to 1954 with some interruption
for wartime service. He was a fine hitter and always wanted
to be an outfielder but the A's usually seemed to need a pitcher.
In addition to pitching duties, he also pinch hit and played
some outfield. In 1948 he hit an astounding .298 and was one
of the best hitting pitchers in A's history. On the mound,
he accumulated 45 victories. He finished his major league
career in 1954 with the St. Louis Cardinals but continued
to play in Texas where he later made his home.
More details on the upcoming celebration will be given in
the near future.
