RE: Connie Mack Commemorative Stamp
Greetings:
I am writing in support of a United States postal stamp being issued to honor Connie Mack—an outstanding American citizen and a paragon of baseball managers. During Mr. Mack’s 66 years in the Major Leagues, teams he managed won 3,776 games, nine American League pennants, and five World Series titles. Beyond his achievements on the ball field, Mr. Mack embodied the highest standards of American character with his unimpeachable honor, commitment to fair play, and dedication to the national pastime. His virtues endeared him to America’s youth, a fact that was recognized by then-President Harry Truman when he wrote to Mr. Mack on April 11, 1950, “In you American sport has had an exemplar whose record has been an inspiration to our youth for a full half century.”
Mr. Mack’s monumental achievements both on and off the ball field have been recorded in several books, and he has been enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His selection to appear on a US postal stamp is fully justified and altogether fitting and proper for a great American and a distinguished citizen.
