Dick
Rosen (Drexel Univ. and PAHS) will be giving the following lecture
next week. The lecture described below is sponsored by Drexel University
and will take place on Thursday, April 29, at 7:00 PM at the Free
Library of Phila., 19th and the Parkway.
“CONNIE MACK AND 125 YEARS OF BASEBALL IN PHILADELPHIA”.
Philadelphia has played an important role in baseball history for
over 175 years. It has contributed six major league teams to organized
baseball since 1871. Perhaps the single-most significant person
in this long history was Connie Mack who arrived in Philadelphia
in 1900 as manager/part-owner of the final iteration of the Philadelphia
Athletics. He remained in his position for over fifty years. Under
his tutelage, the Athletics won nine American League pennants, five
World Series titles, and fielded what is arguably the best team
in Major League history in 1929.
SABR member Dick Rosen will trace this history with facts, figures
and personal stories of the main characters in this long run. He
will also bring in other aspects of Philadelphia baseball including
the emergence of the Phillies whose recent success will be noted.
Dick will also elicit the sharing of personal baseball stories from
the audience.
The talk will be in the Skyline Room which is the one with the rooftop
deck. It does not have a number. When you press the elevator button
for the 4th floor (top floor), it opens into the room.
