Bender Marker Set To Go

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will dedicate the state historical marker commemorating Charles Albert "Chief" Bender this Friday, October 17, at noon. The ceremony, for a marker sponsored in part by the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, will be held at Indian Field, Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Hall of Famer Chief Bender (1883-1954) had a record of 191-102 in twelve seasons with the A's from 1903 to 1914, and he was 6-4 in five World Series with a shutout in 1905 against the New York Giants. Bender, called by Connie Mack his greatest clutch pitcher, also served as a coach with the Athletics.
