A's Society Celebrates 100th Anniversary A's 1901 DebutBy Ernie Montella |
Saturday April 28th was a very festive day at the Societies facility in
Hatboro as throngs
of fans jammed the Museum/Library/Gift Shoppe to take part in a special 100th
anniversary
US Postal cancellation conducted on site. Postal employees, Bill Malizia &
Linda Adams
were on hand for the special occasion. Society Stamp Committee chairman, Mike
Fesnak stated, "That although the official date of the Athletics first game ever, was April 26, 1901, we wanted to offer this special event to all that wanted to attend." From the looks of the following photos,
Mike's decision was the correct one. On hand to mark the event on behalf of
the A's family
was former A's catcher Joe Astroth and wife Marge, who concluded the
festivities by officially
cutting the ceremonial "birthday cake" to the delight of the scores of
people in attendance.
To quote Society historian, Max Silberman, in sentiments expressed by many
others as well,
"Today, the A's Society "raised the bar" and moved to another level for other
organizations to match in providing a facility such as this, free to the
general public, staffed completely by volunteers whose only goal is to
perpetuate the memory of a sports franchise that left town
46 years ago. We can be very proud of what we have accomplished in just a
couple of years.
