The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society is pleased to the winner of our second annual essay contest for high school students. The Society is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to furthering an historical appreciation of the Philadelphia Athletics American League Baseball Club.

The first place winner of the $100 US Savings Bond for his essay on former Phillies Richie Ashburn was Kyle Peoples, 11th grade student at Cheltenham High School.

Eligibility
This contest was open to all high school students who were enrolled in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades.

Requirements
The essay shall consist of not less than 500 nor more than 1,000 words. The essay will be a response to the following question- Who has made the greatest contribution to Philadelphia baseball history? The essay should focus on a person(s), team, or event that has made a lasting impression on the rich history of baseball in Philadelphia. The essays should deal with either the Athletics, Phillies, or Philadelphia Stars of the Negro League.

Criteria
All entries were reviewed and judged by a panel of officers and members of the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society. Submissions were judged on the quality of their historical research, presentation style, scholarship, and contribution to the study and appreciation of Philadelphia baseball history.

Prizes
1st Place -- $1,000.00 US Savings Bond
2nd Place -- $500.00 US Savings Bond
3rd Place -- $200.00 US Savings Bond awarded individually to three contestants

Prizes were presented at the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society's Reunion Breakfast in 2001. In addition, the 1st Place essay and the author's photograph was be published in the A's Society's newsletter, Along the Elephant Trail.
