Harry Kalas "Voice of the Phillies"
CD
Harry Kalas
1936 - 2009
Harry Kalas is truly one of the greatest sportscasters in American
history. He has a magical voice that has been the soundtrack of
Spring and Summer for Philadelphia Phillies fans since 1971. But
he is more than just a voice. He has a deep passion for baseball
and for doing his job well. Just as it is for ballplayers, when
a man can blend in natural gifts with a strong work ethic, that’s
when you create something really special!
In addition to being a gifted broadcaster, Harry Kalas is a genuinely
nice man. Since I joined the Chicago Cubs radio team in 1996, he
has unfailingly treated me with kindness.
Producing this tribute to Harry Kalas was an absolute joy! For
one thing, it allowed me to spend hours listening to old Phillies
game tapes featuring Harry’s play-by-play.
If you are a fan of both Harry Kalas and the Phillies, I sincerely
think this CD will bring back some happy memories.
Track #4 is devoted to Mike Schmidt and his 500th homerun, which
Harry captured both dramatically and emotionally.
I enjoyed listening to a rare recording of a 29-year-old Harry
Kalas in 1965 when the Astrodome opened - you will too!
Harry was at the very top of his game in 1980 when the Phillies
became World Champions, and several of his memorable calls from
1980 are sprinkled throughout Tracks #10 and #11
Track #14 is all about Harry’s close friend and longtime
announcing partner Richie Ashburn, including a couple of great stories
and part of Harry’s unforgettable eulogy at Richie’s
funeral.
Harry’s Hall of Fame acceptance speech is the focus of Track
#15, including his poetic tribute to Phillies fans.
On Track #18, you will get to hear the final few moments of rousing
game #162 from this past 2007 season. The Phils wiped out a 7 game
deficit with only 17 to play, and startled the collapsing New York
Mets. Harry was genuinely excited!
Please enjoy the highlights and the story of one of my favorite
announcers and one of my favorite people, Harry Kalas, the Voice
of the Phillies.
