1950
COMES AGAIN!
by Max Silberman
The l950 season was one of great hope for the Philaelphia Athletics.
As things turned out it was a disaster with the team occupying the
basement with a record of 52-102.
During that season Jimmie Dykes became the de facto manager, although
Connie Mack held that title for his fiftieth and final season at
the helm of the club. The hopes and dreams formed during that contending
season of 1948 were washed away. The club had big plans for that
"Golden Jubilee" or 50th anniversary of the team and Connie
Mack's leadership. The game program, yearbook and even the uniforms
had special colors and patches to mark this momentous event.
If you were a season ticket holder, you would receive a beautiful
decal measuring 4 and 1/4" square proclaiming the "Golden
Jubilee" with reference to Connie Mack and l90l-l950 and of
course the A's elephant. For many years, these prized collectors
items have sold at shows for $50.00 but due to modern technology,
the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society has produced beautiful
replicas which will be offered to new and renewing members.
Non-season ticket holders who missed the opportunity to purchase
one of these decals at the souvenir stand or pasted their originals
to the window will once more have the opportunity to reclaim this
treasure from the A's Society. In this instance, the postman does
ring twice! The 1950 Golden Jubilee decal is a piece of memorabilia
you will be proud to own.
