The 1957 Dodgers were the last edition of the storied Brooklyn
Dodgers franchise to play in Flatbush before leaving for greener
pastures in California, and this full-color 40-card set commemorates
that ballclub. While the 1957 Dodgers will never be remembered for
their on-field achievements (they won 84 while losing 70), they
will forever occupy a special place in Brooklyn Dodger history.
They weren't infamous like the 1951 squad, or heroic like the 1955
unit -- they're legendary simply because they were the last chapter
in a colorful history of Brooklyn big league baseball. All 35 players
who played that season are featured in the set, which also includes
a team card, a manager card, two coaches cards, and a card of Jackie
Robinson who announced his retirement in early 1957. Card fronts
feature a full-color player portrait within a classic 1950s style
design. Card backs are also designed in the style of the era, and
feature player stats, biographies, and cartoons. Player bios also
serve as a timeline of the 1957 season. Baseball artist Ronnie Joyner
produced all aspects of this set, from the portraits, to the cartoons,
to the text, as well as the card design. Card sets are packaged
in team poly bags sealed with an embossed foil Brooklyn Dodgers
sticker. Here's a listing of the cards in the set:
